“The contact between Radio Caroline and Veronica was initiated shortly after the Norderney drifted onto Scheveningen beach. My boss, Ronan O’ Rahilly contacted your people in Hilversum and did the principal deal with Rob Out (technical equipment and some funds against usage of the Mi Amigo). I was coordinating the logistical side of things, getting the Veronica-Tapes onto the tender etc. etc. Shortly before the initial deal ended, Rob Out called me, this was very shortly before the big demonstration-day in The Hague, and begged me to continue the broadcasts of Veronica as your people where afraid that we (the Caroline crew) would end the broadcasts exactly on the decided deadline. I have always had very strong sympathies for Radio Veronica and it was appearant to me that Veronica broadcasting from our ship was a far bigger promotion than putting Radio Caroline back on air. Rob asked me to name a sum and they would pay it if I would give them 4 more days on-air. As I have never been a very materialistic person, I wanted to help Veronica because of what they meant to the Dutch radio landscape and not because of some guilders in my pocket. So I ordered the crew on board to continue the programmes”. | |
